Their own thoughts cease to exist and disappear in the powerful roar of hundreds of cubic meters of water that fall every second over the edge of the rock and disappear into the mist. Niagara Falls seems to be deliberately trying to link between two states, but paradoxically divides them. On the one hand, a huge mass of water, and on the other hand, who can take the label of the right and best experience.
So which side of the Niagara Falls is better - American or Canadian?
First of all, it is very subjective to look at this and that the opinions of Americans and Canadians differ. Everyone naturally digs for their side. Therefore, do not trust anyone. Yet…
Niagara Falls and Numbers
The US wins in numbers. They have two and a half of a total of three waterfalls - American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls. Canada can only take the Horseshoe. On the other hand, it is the highest and largest waterfall of all. It flows through 90% of all the local water.
You can get to the “shower distance”, close enough to feel water droplets on your skin, on both sides. But here too, America is leading precisely because it gives you access to all three waterfalls. If you don’t get wet enough, put on a raincoat and board one of the boats that will take you straight to Horseshoe. You don’t have to look or think for a long time. All of them are called Maid of the Mist, sail from both sides and sail there.
At the first sight
Canada compensates for this with a better outlook. At your fingertips, you will find all three waterfalls set in the Niagara Falls State Park. Seen from the American side, a single waterfall is lined with the skyline of Niagara Falls hotels and lookout towers. Canada adds something extra. A colorful light show to be played on the opposite American water walls every night after dark.
And Canada puts them even more. If you pay a little extra, you can take a picture of the entire waterfall system from above. Just take the elevator to the 236-meter-high Skylon Tower, which belongs to the local casino.
Even more fun Niagary
After all, the casino is not the only thing that makes Canadian Niagara Falls small Las Vegas. Lookout towers, amusement parks, hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops have grown like mushrooms after rain. The massive development of entertainment facilities for visitors on the Canadian side may not be to everyone’s liking. Perhaps you will appreciate the greener and more domestic character of the American side.
Both sides offer a way to get under the surface. You can see the waterfalls from the inside with the bottom from the expedition to the depths of rocks through which they break. Journey Behind the Falls on the Canadian side leads through a tunnel originally built for the first hydroelectric power plant. The American Cave of the Winds, as the name suggests, is a rocky system under American waterfalls. As the main cave collapsed and only the corridors remained, the Canadian underground is somewhat more interesting.
In the vicinity of the waterfalls you will also find historical monuments related to the US-Canadian War of 1812. These are mainly Fort Erie, Fort George and the American side of Fort Niagara.
All in all
The answer to the question of whether you should visit Niagara from the American or Canadian side is actually clear. - Both. They both have it. And the best way to make an opinion is to compare it yourself. And they are connected by a bridge, on which you can easily get to the other side. Just remember that you are moving from state to state. And you need a visa for both.
